A 257 acre subdivision is proposed for construction in the Maalaea area of central Maui.

The applicant, MVI, LLC, proposes the construction of 1,100 single-family homes at the Ohana Kai Village complex.  Plans call for 60 percent of the dwellings, or 660 units to be affordable homes.

The proposed project site is bordered on the east by the Honoapi’ilani Highway, beyond which lies the Ma’alaea Triangle. To the south of the project area is the Ma’alaea Small Boat Harbor, while agricultural lands are located to the north, and state conservation lands border the project to the west.

The property was acquired by MVI in October of 2008 from former owner Maalaea Properties, LLC.

Prior to the sale, the previous owner had proposed the development of the property into a project called Maalaea Mauka, but that proposal is no longer being pursued.

Portions of the project site are currently being utilized to support agricultural functions, such as cattle grazing.

The project calls for the development of a new wastewater treatment facility, a town center and park space.  Amenities include an open-space buffer along the highway and a 15-acre community oriented park linked to the neighborhoods with a pedestrian/bicycle path.

There is a 30 day comment period on the project’s environmental impact statement preparation notice.
